Choosing protective equipment for the job
We keep the range small on purpose, so this is the short version of what we have learned: which item suits which job, what the standards on a listing actually mean, and where the decision stops being ours and becomes your site's.
Fall protection
A harness alone does not arrest a fall. It needs a connecting device and an anchor, and the three work as a system. Our five point harness has a dorsal attachment point between the shoulder blades and adjusts 80 to 140 cm at the waist; the self retracting lifeline stops you inside 61 cm at a maximum average arresting force of 408 kg. Both quote United States standards, not AS/NZS 1891, and we say so on the page.
High visibility clothing
A mesh vest for warm days, a fleece hoodie for cold mornings, a waterproof jacket for the wet. They are made to be layered rather than chosen between. Reflective strips are 5 cm on all three. Wash them before the strips get grimy, because dirt kills reflectivity long before the material wears out.
Face and eye protection
A face shield is secondary protection and most workplaces require eye protection underneath it. Our shield is polycarbonate with integrated side and chin guards; the glasses are built to fit over prescription frames, which is the pair people actually keep wearing. Neither is a welding filter, and clear lenses give no protection from an arc.
Gloves
Three jobs, three gloves. Chainsaw gloves carry a 12 layer stopper patch on the back of the left hand, tested to EN 381-7 class 1. The PVC gauntlets are latex free with a 26 inch cuff for chemicals and wet work. The cowhide animal handling gloves run up the forearm, which is where a bite lands.
Welding leather
An apron covers the torso and sleeves cover the arms, and they are a pair rather than alternatives. Both are split cowhide sewn with Kevlar thread, because on worked leather the seams give out before the hide does. The apron uses cross back straps, which puts the weight on your shoulders instead of your neck.
Knee protection
Three layers do three jobs: gel and foam next to the knee, rubber for stiffness, a hard thermoplastic shell to take the impact and let you slide rather than catch. The two 25.4 cm strap extenders in the box are what make them fit over work trousers, which is usually why people stop wearing knee pads.
What a standard on a listing means
ANSI and ASTM are United States standards, EN standards are European, and neither is the same as AS/NZS certification. Our listings quote what the manufacturer states, attributed to the manufacturer. If your workplace requires an Australian certification, ask before you order and we will chase the documentation rather than guess.
